Our Background

Words That Work was founded in 1993 by Laurie Pearce and Mark Bernick. Laurie has an M.A. in Professional Writing, is the former Director of Writing at the University of Waterloo's Centre for Professional Writing, and has 15 years of experience as a technical writer and manager and 5 years experience as a writing instructor. Mark is a business professional with an MBA from Western who understands the importance of effective technical communication.

Words That Work is made up of a team of experienced, award-winning and dedicated technical writers, designers, editors, and trainers who work full-time (and more) to help meet the needs of our clients in a variety of technology markets. Our staff members bring a variety of skills and backgrounds to their challenging jobs, and work well both as independent writers on a project, or as members of a documentation team. All our staff are intelligent, enthusiastic and independent workers who would be an asset to any documentation project.

Words That Work is a member of ITAC (Information Technology Association of Canada) and an Oracle Services Provider. We are also actively involved in the Society for Technical Communication (STC).

 

Our Clients 

The people who use our services tend to fall into three basic categories:

• developers of software packages for a general market or of custom code for a specific client
• purchasers of software packages who need customized documentation to reflect their specific uses of that software
• consulting companies providing technology support services who see an added value in being able to offer documentation as part of their service.
